The Healthy Start Home Visit Program is available to any pregnant woman and families with a baby (birth through one year) living in Nemaha County.  The primary goal of the Healthy Start Home Visit Program is to provide health resources, education, outreach and family support to ensure healthy mothers and infants. A Registered Nurse can assist a family before the baby is born to help the mother have the healthiest pregnancy possible.

The nurse can help the mother with:

  • Finding a doctor
  • Good nutrition
  • Preparing for breastfeeding her baby
  • Infant car safety seats and how to use them
  • Planning for child care, if needed
  • Stopping behaviors that can hurt the growing baby
(smoking, drinking alcohol, or other drugs)

A home visit from a Registered Nurse will be scheduled at the mother's convenience soon after the baby is born.
The nurse will answer the mother's questions about:

  • Recovery after having a baby
  • Baby care
  • Breastfeeding
  • Nutrition for mother and baby
  • Regular health checks for the baby
  • Immunizations for mother and baby
  • Expected infant development
  • Understanding a baby's or child's behavior
  • Change in the family with a baby
  • Locating agencies/programs that can assist the mother and family if needed
Every mother receives a gift bag of helpful baby items as well as health and safety information.

There is no cost to the parent to receive a Healthy Start Home Visit.
